Stanley Cup Playoffs 2011

The Finals!

What’s worse than the Habs losing to the Bruins in round one? How about the Bruins making it to the finals?  Well as it happens, to the chagrin of most Habs fans, Claude Julien’s Bruins are getting a crack at the cup. The most aggravating thing is that the Bruins are not even that good of a hockey team. Sure they have a few good forwards and whether we like it or not Chara is a difference maker but this is a team that has proven time and time again that when a team plays good hockey against them they simply don't know how to react.

The Conference Finals

So let me get this straight, Tampa Bay runs over Washington for the sweep, Boston does the same against Philly and two teams that have a history of underachieving advanced to their conference final. If we learned anything from round two, it’s that predicting playoff games in today’s NHL is getting harder and harder. At least I can say that I have taken the lead among my fellow HID writing staff going 2 for 4 with 1 perfect series in round two.

One step closer

Following a grueling first round that saw four of the eight series being decided in game seven and out of those four, two needing sudden death overtime to find the winners, eight teams advanced to the next round in their quest for the big prize.  While I expected few upsets in the first round, the top four teams with the exception of Anaheim in both the conference advanced in their respective Conference semi-finals.  I had personally picked Anaheim to beat Nashville, even though I was not completely convinced about Anaheim’s goaltending.  With Nashville’s weak off

No Suspension for Ference again!

Is anybody surprised?  Nope.  The joke continues, or should it be called favoritism?  A blatant head hit by Andrew Ference, way behind the play, goes unpunished by the National Hockey League.  The victim, Jeff Halpern, who, in the image of their team, gets jeered by the Bruins fans, visibly shaky and doozy by the hit.  Just yesterday, we did a recap of the NHL suspensions during the playoffs when the question was out whether Milan Lucic will be suspended for his hit on Jaroslav Spacek, he was n

Round 2 Predictions

I am happy to say that I was 5 for 8 with 2 perfect series called with my first round predictions finishing second among the HiD writing staff. Only fellow HID writer Mitin Patel out predicted me going 6 for 8 with 2 perfect series. I am sad to say that the Habs are out and they won’t get their rematch with the Capitals. I am even sadder about the fact that my wife kicked my butt with her first round predictions going 6 for 8 with an astounding 4 perfect series.  Needless to say I need to pick it up if I am going to regain my hockey dominance in the household.

No game 7 magic this year

This was it, game seven, winner take all, last team standing! The Habs did their best to claw their way back into this game but it simply was not meant to be, as they lost the game in overtime for the third time in this series. The first goal of the game came early when Johnny Boychuk beat Carey Price with his point shot just 3:31 in. The puck found its way past Price’s trapper after he had just pushed Patrice Bergeron out of his crease. A couple of minutes later, the Bruins jumped to a quick 2-0 lead giving us the sense that this could be a long night.

The Perfect Symphony

Once again the Montreal Canadiens had their backs against the wall.  Once again the Canadiens were facing elimination against a stronger and favorite opposition.  This script had been written before in last year’s playoffs more than once.  A couple of overtime losses including a double overtime loss in game five in Boston put the Bruins in the driver's seat.  But instead of rolling over and handing the Bruins the keys to the Conference semi-final, the Habs fought and fought well to force a game seven tonight in Beantown.

The Final Showdown

It has come down to this.  Game 7.  The last one in a rather tough series between the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins.  If it's of any help, history is on the Habs side.  The teams have met for seven game 7s all time and Montreal has won five of them.

Will Lucic be suspended?

First of all, let's be realistic, it is the playoffs and the league has decided to close their eyes on many vicious hits that have been given during these playoffs.  Prime example is Philadelphia's Mike Richard's hit on Buffalo Sabre's Tim Connolly when he drilled the latter into the corner boards, head first, as Connolly chased the puck.  Buffalo lost the services of Connolly for game 7 and they were forced to bring Derek Roy back in the lineup, eventually losing game 7 to the Philadelphia Flyers last night.

"Do whatever it takes" - Hal Gill

It's game day.  Elimination game day to be exact.  A loss tonight means it's time to say goodbye to the season and clear out the lockers for another long summer before the quest for the cup begins again in 2011-2012 regular season.  A win tonight on the other hand extends the lifeline by one more game at least and game 7 will belong to the team that plays with the most desperation.
