Habs acquire Kaberle, ship Spacek to Hurricanes

In a surprise move, showing some desperation, the Montreal Canadiens shipped injured defenseman Jaroslav Spacek to the Carolina Hurricanes in return for Tomas Kaberle.  Spacek who has been out of the lineup since November 14 due to an upper body injury had started skating with the team but had not been cleared for contact as of yet.  Drafted 117th overall in the 1998 draft (5th round) by the Florida Panthers, he has played 846 games in the NHL and has recorded 343 points so far in his career. The Hurricanes will be the 8th team that Spacek will be joining in his long NHL career.

Panic Mode?

The Habs remain winless at home in the 2011-2012 season and despite everybody in the locker room taking a calm demeanor after the overtime loss against the Maple Leafs on Saturday, GM Pierre Gauthier made what some see as a panic move, or in others words, moves that show some sort of panic installing in the GMs' mind.  The Habs sent recently returned Brock Trotter along with a 7th round draft pick in the next year's NHL entry draft for center Petteri Nokelainen and minor league defenseman Garrett Stafford.

The Habs managed to spoil Winnipeg's huge "homecoming party", but lost Michael Cammalleri in the process and as a result, have recalled forward Aaron Palushaj from the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL.  Cammalleri, who is expected to miss the next two weeks with a lower body injury, managed to score the first goal in last night's game, and the first goal against the returning Jets team.

Gritty forward Blair Betts didn't stay long with the Montreal Canadiens.  Only a few days after being claimed on the waivers by the Habs, the 31 year old centerman was sent back to the Flyers, reversing Habs waiver claim on the basis of a lengthy NHL bylaw 11.8 (a).  The bylaw states that a player claimed on waivers may be returned if he's deemed to be physically unfit.  Commissioner Gary Bettman made the decision after reviewing submissions from both teams.

The Hamilton Bulldogs opened their season on October 8th against the Rochester Americans with a 5-2 victory in front of 6,123 fans at the Copps Coliseum.  Brock Trotter, the newly returned, and Frederic St-Denis, the defenseman who impressed many at the Montreal Canadiens' training camp, shined in the victory and scored two goals each.  Trotter also registered two assists for a four point night.  Nathan Lawson recorded his first win for the season with 28 saves on 30 shots.

The Montreal Canadiens recalled Swedish centerman Andreas Engqvist only a day after assigning him to the Hamilton Bulldogs and acquiring center Blair Betts from the waivers.  The Habs signed the 6'4", 197 lbs centerman in July 2009 to a three year contract.  He was recalled twice by the Canadiens last season in mid-January and at the end of March.  During his short stints, he played three games with the Habs including his first NHL career game against the Ottawa Senators on January 21 averaging about ten minutes per game of ice-time.

It was a busy Monday for Montreal's GM, Pierre Gauthier.  After announcing the signing of Max Pacioretty to a two year deal, the Habs finished the day with another announcement, the signing of diminutive center, David Desharnais to a two years deal.  As per the club policy, Habs did not release the terms of the contract, but according to the sources, Desharnais will earn a total of $1.7 Million in the next two seasons, that is $750,000 for 2011-2012 and $950,000 for 2012-2013 season.

The Montreal Canadiens announced earlier today that they have signed Finnish prospect, centerman Joonas Nattinen to a three year, two-way contract.  While it is not the signing that everybody has been expecting to hear about, namely Andrei Markov, it is none-the-less an important addition to the team roster.  The 6'2", 186 lbs, 20 years old Nattinen was drafted by the Habs in the third round (65th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Originally from Jamsa Finland, he was the top ranked Finnish Prospect in the 2009 Entry draft.

This rumor has been hot and the response has been mixed on whether Habs fans would like to see Jagr in the "blue-blanc et rouge" or not.  For all the fans waiting to see Jagr play with the Habs and seeing Jagr and Plekanec united on a line, we have some disappointing news.  It seems that the Habs and Jaromir Jagr are too far apart.  Our sources have confirmed that Jagr's camp is interested in a 2 years deal with no trade clause and that Montreal is not interested in such a deal.

Among the die-hard Habs fan, the news has been circulating for a few days now that Alexei Yemelin (Emelin) from the AK Bars Kazan of the KHL might be signing with the Montreal Canadiens and be part of the lineup in the 2011-2012 season.  Several sources have reported that Yemelin's signing will also have a clause allowing him to return to the KHL instead of playing in the AHL in case Habs don't retain his services.  The contract is said to be for 1 year and no monetary value has been placed on the agreement as of yet.

Karri Ramo, the talented netminder, whose rights were traded by the Tampa Bay Lightning in return for goaltender Cedric Desjardins has signed a two years deal with the Avangard Omsk.  Native of Finland, Ramo, 24, played his second season with the Avangard Omsk and managed to win 33 out of the 44 games he played while keeping a Goals Against Average of 1.97 and a save percentage of .925.  He showed marked improvement over his first year when he won 21 out of the 44 games he started with a GAA of 2.11 and a SV% of .913.

IIHF plucks a few Habs
